To complement the exact offset Double Square Root (DSR) Kirchhoff migration, Seismic Ventures has developed the 3D Velocity Image Point (VIP) software. Even with the dynamic application of a DSR Kirchhoff, small velocity errors in pre-stack time migration can cause incorrect imaging and potential errors in interpretation. VIP analysis software allows the study of migration velocity in the two domains of velocity vs. offset correction and migration image point stack response.

The current industry standard is the single domain of velocity vs. offset by measuring flatness within a gather after migration and then residual NMO adjustment of the gather to flatten events after migration. This method does not correct for the data having been migrated into the wrong bin location and time because of the initial velocity errors. Velocity field errors of only 1% to 2% have been found to significantly degrade the response of major seismic reflectors. VIP analysis can correct these errors before migration and allow the data to image into the proper bin and time during the migration process.
